For more than 6000 years leather has been used by humans as a material to make life more comfortable. It was only in 1858 that so-called chrome tanning with chromium (III) salts was introduced to replace the previously widespread vegetable tanning method to produce durable leather. Nowadays, approx. 80% of all leather produced in the world is tanned with chromium(III) salts.
